The Louisiana red swamp crawfish is a bit of a bully… it’s what’s known as a “keystone” species. That means if our tough Procambarus clarkii is introduced into another eco-system, it will run off the native species. That’s what’s behind a new Maryland Fisheries Service proposed rule making it illegal to fish with or even possess crayfish in some Maryland fishing holes. Michael A.
